What is Zostrix Used for?

Zostrix (Capsaicin) is an over-the-counter topical cream used to relieve nerve pain (neuralgia) that remains following shingles (post-herpetic pain). It may also be used for arthritis pain. The active ingredient in Zostrix is Capsaicin. Capsaicin belongs to the class of medication called topical analgesics. It works by reducing levels of a chemical (substance P), which is involved in transmitting pain impulses to the brain. After applying the cream on the skin surface, it desensitizes sensory receptors in your skin and lowers the pain nerve cells’ chemical store, causing you to feel less pain.
