What is Intuniv used for?


Intuniv (Guanfacine Hydrochloride) is a long-acting prescription medication that is used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children who are older than six years old. Guanfacine is not a stimulant like other medications that is used to treat ADHD. This medication is thought to affect receptors in the parts of the brain that lead to strengthening working memory, reducing distraction and improves attention and impulse control. The recommended dosage of Intuniv is one to four mg once daily in the morning and evening. You may start seeing an improvement in ADHD symptoms in about three or four weeks.

What are the Possible Side Effects of Intuniv?


The common side effects may include constipation, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, headache, stomach pain, nausea and tiredness. The serious side effects may include:

• Confusion;

• Difficulty breathing;

• Rash, itching and swelling of tongue;

• Severe allergic reaction;

• Severe dizziness and fainting;

• Slow heart rate

Are there any Precautions or Drug Interactions for Intuniv?


You should not take Intuniv if you are allergic to Guanfacine or if you have any other allergies. This medication may make you dizzy or drowsy. You should not drive or do any activity that requires you to be alert. You should avoid alcoholic beverages.
