What Dosages and Forms are Zanidip Available in?

The brand Zanidip and its generic Lercanidipine are available in the strength of 10 mg and 20 mg tablets.

What is Zanidip Used for?

Zanidip (Lercanidipine) is a prescription medicine used to lower high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults over the age of 18 years. The active ingredient in Zanidip tablet is Lercanidipine. Lercanidipine belongs to the class of medications called calcium channel blockers (dihydropyridine derivative). It works by relaxing and opening the blood vessels allowing the blood to circulate more freely around the body. This lowers blood pressure and allows the heart to work more efficiently. Treating hypertension helps to prevent heart disease, heart attack, and stroke.

What are the Possible Side Effects of Zanidip?

If you experience any of the following common side effects, contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately:
• A fast, pounding, or irregular heartbeat;
• Fatigue or sleepiness;
• Gastrointestinal disturbances such as heartburn, nausea, epigastric pain, or diarrhea;
• Headache;
• Reddening of your fact, neck, and chest (skin flushing);
• Swollen ankle

Contact your doctor if you experience the serious side effects of Zanidip, and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the severe side effects such as:
• Having chest pain that does not stop after a few minutes or is new or worse if you already have angina

This is not a complete list of the adverse effect of Zanidip. Kindly reach out to your doctor or pharmacist if any of the above-listed side effects last longer than usual or get worse.

Are there any Precautions and Drug Interactions for Zanidip?

Zanidip, and its generic Lercanidipine, comes as a tablet and should be taken once a day. It would be best to swallow the pill with a cup of water. You can take it any time, but try to ensure it's around the same time each day. It's best to take it at least 15 minutes before a meal. Ask your doctor if there is anything you do not understand about your medication.

Do not eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice while you're taking Lercanidipine. It can increase the amount of Lercanidipine in your body and cause side effects. Usually, treatment with Lercanidipine is long-term, even for the rest of your life. Lercanidipine starts to work the day you take it, but it may take a couple of weeks to notice its effect. Do not take 2 doses to make up for a forgotten one. Taking more than your prescribed dose of lercanidipine can make you feel dizzy and sleepy. Talk to your doctor if you want to stop taking lercanidipine. Stopping lercanidipine may cause your blood pressure to rise, increasing your risk of heart attack and stroke.

You should not take Zanidip and inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have or have had:
• Heart diseases or recent heart attack;
• Kidney disease;
• Liver disease (including hepatitis B infection);
• Low blood pressure or you are using antihypertensive medicines

Reach out to your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to get pregnant, or breastfeed a baby. Like most calcium channel blockers, Zanidip is not for use during pregnancy. Tell your doctor immediately if you become pregnant while you are taking Zanidip. Also, talk to your doctor if you are breastfeeding or intend to breastfeed. It's unknown how much Lercanidipine gets into breast milk, but it's likely to be small and unlikely to harm your baby.

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements, to prevent drug interactions that might be fatal to your health. This drug interaction may make your drug less effective, cause adverse effects, or potentiate other drugs' actions. For example, there may be a drug interaction between Zanidip and other drugs, such as:
• Antifungal medicines (such as ketoconazole or itraconazole);
• Antivirals (such as ritonavir);
• Antiepileptic medications such as carbamazepine, phenobarbital, phenytoin;
• Astemizole;
• Ciclosporin;
• Cimetidine;
• Macrolide antibiotics (such as erythromycin or troleandomycin)
