What is Vemlidy Used for?

Vemlidy (Tenofovir Alafenamide Fumarate) is a prescription medicine used to treat chronic hepatitis B in adults and adolescents (12 years and older with a body weight of at least 35 kg) with compensated liver disease. The active ingredient in Vemlidy tablet is Tenofovir Alafenamide Fumarate. Tenofovir Alafenamide Fumarate belongs to the antiviral class of medication. It works by stopping or slowing the growth of the virus by inhibiting the enzyme that allows the virus to make a copy of itself.

Are there any Precautions and Drug Interactions for Vemlidy?

Before starting treatment with this medication, your doctor should test you for HIV infection. If you have an HIV infection and hepatitis B infection, tenofovir alafenamide should not be used alone since this may make it harder to treat your HIV infection. Combination drug treatment should always be used to treat HIV infection. Vemlidy comes as a tablet and should be taken with water once daily. You should follow your doctor's order on your prescription sheet.

Do not stop taking this medication suddenly. Severe acute exacerbations of hepatitis B have been reported in patients who have discontinued therapy for hepatitis B. Your doctor will monitor you for an assessment of your liver function for at least several months once you stop taking the Vemlidy tablet. You should reach out to your doctor if there is no significant improvement in your symptoms.

You should not take Vemlidy and inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have or have had:
• Bone disease e.g., Osteoporosis;
• HIV (if you are taking tenofovir to treat hepatitis B);
• Kidney disease;
• Liver disease (especially hepatitis B if you also have HIV);
• Low bone mineral density;
• Pancreatitis

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant and plan to get pregnant or breastfeed your child while using the Vemlidy tablet. During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when needed. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. It is unknown if this medication passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements, to prevent drug interactions which might be fatal to your health. This drug interaction may make your drug less effective, cause adverse effects, or potentiate other drugs' action. There may be a drug interaction between Vemlidy and other drugs, such as:
• Apalutamide;
• Duvelisib;
• Elagolix;
• Encorafenib;
• Orlistat;
• Stiripentol;
• Tafamidis;
• Tafamidis meglumine;
• Tucatinib;
• Voclosporin
