What is Urea Used for?

Urea cream is an over-the-counter medicine used to treat dry or rough skin. It also removes the dead tissue in some wounds to soften/dissolve the dry/rough substance caused by eczema, psoriasis, corns, callus, and nail problems (e.g., ingrown nails). The active ingredient in this medicine is Urea. Urea belongs to a class of medications known as Emollient (Keratolytic). It works by increasing the moisture in the skin by softening/dissolving in the horny substance (keratin) holding the top layer of skin cells together. This helps the dead skin cells fall off and keep more water in.

What are the Possible Side Effects of Urea?

If you experience any of the following common side effects, contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately:
• Burning sensation;
• Local irritation or itching;
• Transient stinging;
• Rash;
• Swelling

Stop using Urea and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the severe side effects such as:
• Unusual changes in the skin (e.g., blistering, peeling, turning white/soft/soggy from too much wetness);
• Signs of skin infection

This is not a complete list of the adverse effect of Urea cream. Kindly reach out to your doctor or pharmacist if any of the above-listed side effects last longer than usual or get worse.
