What is Tasigna Used for?
Tasigna (Nilotinib) capsule is a prescription medication used to treat adults and children (ages 1 year and older) with newly diagnosed Philadelphia chromosome–positive (Ph+)
chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) in chronic phase. Tasigna is also effective in treating adults and children (ages 1 year and older) with Ph+ CML in chronic phase or accelerated phase who no longer benefit from, or did not tolerate, other treatment, including Gleevec (imatinib). The active ingredient in Tasigna capsule is Nilotinib. Nilotinib belongs to the class of drugs called Antineoplastics, Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitors. Nilotinib blocks a tyrosine kinase protein called BCR-ABL. By this mechanism of action, it slows down or stops the growth of cancer cells.

Are there any Precautions and Drug Interactions for Tasigna?
Tasigna comes as a capsule, which you can take with a cup of water. The capsule should be taken twice daily or according to your doctor's prescription. Do not eat food for at least 2 hours before or 1 hour after taking your dose. Avoid grapefruit, grapefruit juice, and any supplement containing grapefruit extract while taking Tasigna capsule. You should have a heart test (EKG) before starting Nilotinib. Nilotinib can reduce the number of blood cells in your blood. You will have regular blood tests during treatment to check this. Your doctor may take your blood and test it. This is to check that your blood test results are at a safe level to continue treatment. If they are not, your treatment may be delayed for a short while to let blood cell levels recover. You take Nilotinib for as long as it works, and the side effects can be managed. It would be best if you didn't stop taking your medication without talking to your doctor.
You should not take Tasigna and inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have or have had:
• Electrolyte abnormalities;
• Heart diseases;
• Kidney disease;
• Liver disease
Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant or breastfeed a child. It would be best if you did not become pregnant while using Nilotinib. Nilotinib may harm an unborn baby. Talk to your doctor about effective birth control while using the Tasigna capsule. It is unknown whether this drug passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements, to prevent drug interactions which might be fatal to your health. This interaction may make your drug less effective, cause adverse effects, or potentiate other drugs' actions. For example, there may be a drug interaction between Tasigna and other drugs, such as:
• Disopyramide;
• Goserelin;
• Indapamide;
• Leuprolide;
• Pentamidine;
• Pimozide;
• Procainamide;
• Quinidine;
• Sotalol;
• Toremifene
