What is Tagamet Used for?

Tagamet (Cimetidine) is a prescription medicine used to treat gastrointestinal ulcers and the recurrence of the ulcer after treatment. It is also used in treating people with Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), erosive esophagitis, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. The active ingredient in the Tagamet tablet is Cimetidine. Cimetidine belongs to the class of medicine called Histamine, H2 Antagonists/blockers. It works by blocking the H2 receptors of gastric parietal cells, inhibiting gastric secretions, and reducing the stomach's acid.

What are the Possible Side Effects of Tagamet?

If you experience any of the following common side effects, contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately:
• Dizziness;
• Headache;
• Somnolence

Stop using Tagamet and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the severe side effects such as:
• Breast swelling or pain;
• Confusion, especially in adults;
• Headaches that are severe or don't go away;
• Joint pain;

Are there any Precautions and Drug Interactions for Tagamet?

Before taking the Cimetidine tablet, inform your doctor if you are allergic to it or other antihistamines such as famotidine and ranitidine. Cimetidine comes as a tablet and should be taken with a cup of water. It is usually taken once a day at bedtime or two to four times a day with meals and at bedtime. It is taken within 30 minutes to prevent symptoms before eating or drinking foods that cause heartburn. You should use the Cimetidine tablet as directed by your doctor and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Do not take more or less of it or more often than your doctor prescribes it. If heartburn, acid indigestion, or sour stomach symptoms last longer than two weeks, reach out to your doctor immediately.

You should not take Tagamet and inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have or have had:
• Heart diseases;
• History of depression/suicidal thoughts;
• Kidney disease;
• Liver disease (including hepatitis B infection);
• Low blood pressure or you are using antihypertensive medicines

Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to get pregnant, or breastfeed a baby. During pregnancy, Cimetidine should be used only when needed. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. Cimetidine passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding your child.

Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements, to prevent drug interactions that might be fatal to your health. This drug interaction may make your drug less effective, cause adverse effects, or potentiate other drugs' actions. For example, there may be a drug interaction between Tagamet and other drugs, such as:
• Dofetilide;
• Eliglustat;
• Lomitapide;
• Metformin;
• Pimozide
