What Is Synvisc Used For?
Synvisc is indicated for the treatment of pain in

It is a temporary replacement and supplement for synovial fluid and is most effective in patients who are actively and regularly using the affected joint. Synvisc is available only for intra-articular injection by a doctor and is a treatment to decrease pain and discomfort, allowing more extensive movement of joint. It is injected once a week (one week apart) for a total of three injections.
What Are The Possible Side Effects Of Synvisc?
Some of the common side effects that can occur after injecting Synvisc include pain in the injected knee, swelling in the injected knee, joint effusion, stiffness, warmth, and swelling. Some other side effects of this injection include hypersensitivity reactions, angioedema, rash, itching, hives, fever, nausea, headache, dizziness, chills, muscle cramps, weakness, flushing, and facial swelling. These are not all the possible side effects of Synvisc. In case of any unexpected effect, contact your healthcare professional right away.
Are there any Precautions and Drug interactions for Synvisc?
Do not inject Synvisc intravascularly or extra-articularly or into the synovial tissues and capsule. Do not concomitantly use disinfectants containing quaternary ammonium salts for skin preparation because hyaluronan can precipitate in their presence.
Synvisc should not be used if:
• Venous or lymphatic stasis is present in the leg to be injected. Ask your doctor to explain if you do not understand
• There is severe inflammation or infection in the joints
• Patients have skin diseases or infections in the infected joint
• Patients have hypersensitivity (allergy) to hyaluronan (sodium hyaluronate) preparations.
Precautions:
• Synvisc should not be used if there is the presence of large intra-articular effusion prior to injection
• Patients should avoid any strenuous activity following the injection and should resume full activities after a few days
• The safety and efficacy of Synvisc are not known in pregnant women and in children below 18 years of age
• It is not known whether Synvisc is excreted in breast milk. The safety and efficacy of Synvisc are not known in breastfeeding women
• Synvisc contains a small number of avian proteins and should not be used in patients with hypersensitivities to avian proteins, feathers, and eggs
When injection is given in the knee, avoid activity for 48 hours or as you have been told by your doctor. Do not stand on your feet for more than 1 hour at a time during the first 48 hours after getting the injection. If you see a different doctor, inform him or her that you are using Synvisc.
