What is Synthivan used for?
Synthivan (Atazanavir and Ritonavir) is a medication used for the treatment and maintenance of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) (a virus transmitted through bodily fluids that attacks cells in the body that fight infection, damaging the immune system and interfering with the body’s ability to fight infection) and Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) (a potentially life-threatening condition caused by untreated late-stage HIV). Synthivan is not a cure for HIV or AIDS. Synthivan contains two medications, Ritonavir and Atazanavir. Ritonavir and Atazanavir both belong to a class of medications called antiretroviral protease inhibitors. Protease is an enzyme that is needed by HIV for reproduction. Ritonavir and Atazanavir both work together to block the actions of protease, and in turn stop the virus from multiplying, which lowers the levels of HIV in your blood, and allows your body to increase its levels of CD4 cells, which are white blood cells that are responsible for fighting infections in the body. Take this medicine as prescribed by your doctor. When taking this medication effectively, the virus can reach undetectable levels in the body in three to six months. Do not take it in larger or smaller amounts, or for longer than recommended. Swallow it as a whole. Do not chew, crush or break it. Synthivan Tablet should be taken with food.
What Are the Possible Side Effects of Synthivan?
Some of the common side effects of Synthivan may include headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, taste change, dizziness, drowsiness, or peripheral neuropathy (tingling and numbness of the feet and hands). Some serious side effects include rash, signs of high blood sugar (fatigue, headache, blurred vision, frequent urination, increased thirst, fruity breath odor), signs of kidney problems (decreased urination, fluid retention, swelling in your legs, ankles, or feet drowsiness, shortness of breath, nausea, fatigue), signs of liver problems (dark urine, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes), upper right-sided stomach pain, fatigue, nausea, vomiting). These are not all the possible side effects of Synthivan. In case of any unexpected effect, consult your healthcare professional immediately.
