What is Sialor Used for?

Sialor (Anethole Trithione) is an organic compound that belongs to the anisole class of compounds. These are organic compounds containing a methoxybenzene or a derivative. Therefore it is a saliva stimulant that can be used for patients with Sjogren's syndrome and is available without a prescription.

Sjogren's syndrome (pronounced "SHOW-grins") is a chronic disease in which white blood cells attack the glands that produce moisture. Dry eyes and mouth are the most common symptoms, but it's a systemic disease that affects the kidneys, GI tract, blood vessels, lung, liver, pancreas, and central nervous system. Many patients suffer from exhaustion and joint pain. It is one of the most common autoimmune diseases, affecting up to four million people in the United States. Over-the-counter drugs can help with many of the symptoms and issues of Sjogren's syndrome. Sialor is used to alleviate mouth dryness caused by a lack of normal salivary production. Xerostomia causes dysphagia, taste alterations, and tooth cavities and makes you more prone to pain, infections, and irritation. In a double-blind crossover trial, individuals with autoimmune exocrinopathy (Sjogren's syndrome) were given Sialor, a saliva production stimulant. Sialor appears to relieve xerostomia symptoms and enhance salivary flow rate in most people, with few adverse effects. Sialor effectively treats xerostomia in people with Sjogren's syndrome, and it may also help with xerophthalmia. Anethole trithione (ATT) is considered to increase the number of muscarinic receptor sites on salivary acinar cells, increasing salivary output (whose activation is known to stimulate salivary production).
