What is Sebivo Used for?

Sebivo (Telbivudine) is a prescription medicine used to treat people with chronic hepatitis B infection who also have active liver inflammation. Hepatitis B is a viral infection that multiplies in the liver and causes liver damage. This infection causes liver inflammation. Long-term liver inflammation can lead to cirrhosis and liver failure. The active ingredient in Sebivo is Telbivudine. Telbivudine belongs to a class of drugs called antivirals. It works by stopping the hepatitis B virus from reproducing, resulting in less liver damage and improved liver function.

Stop using Sebivo and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the severe side effects such as:

Are there any Precautions and Drug Interactions for Sebivo?

Before using this medication, you should tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to Sebivo or have other problems when using Sebivo. It is crucial to continue using this medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Sebivo is a tablet. Swallow the drug with a glass of water. Do not chew, split, or crush it. The tablet can be taken with or without food. Continue taking Sebivo every day for as long as your doctor tells you to. Do not change your dose or stop taking Sebivo without talking to your doctor. Sebivo is intended for long-term treatment that may last for months or years. Your doctor will regularly monitor your condition to ensure the treatment has the desired effect. You may still infect others with the hepatitis B virus (HBV) through sexual contact or exposure to contaminated blood, even if you take Sebivo. Always use condoms and avoid any other exchange of body fluids if you have sexual intercourse with a partner who is not immune against hepatitis B. A vaccine is available to prevent infection with HBV. Sebivo may affect your ability to drive or operate machinery. Avoid driving or using machinery if you experience dizziness after using the drug. Do not miss your clinic appointment and discuss with your doctor if your experience a serious side effect or worsening of your symptoms.

You should not use Sebivo and inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have or have had:
• Hepatitis C or D;
• HIV/AIDs;
• Kidney disease;
• Liver transplant

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant. You should not use Sebivo when pregnant. If you have hepatitis B and become pregnant, talk to your doctor about how best to protect your baby. Sebivo may reduce the risk of transmitting your hepatitis B virus to your unborn baby if taken in combination with the hepatitis B vaccine and Hepatitis B immune globulin. Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding. It is unknown if Telbivudine passes into breast milk or if it may affect your nursing infant. Do not breastfeed during treatment. Sebivo is not safe for use in children below 16 years of age. Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements, to prevent drug interactions that might be fatal to your health. This drug interaction may make your drug less effective, cause adverse effects, or potentiate other drugs' actions. There may be a drug interaction between Sebivo and other drugs, such as:
• Pegylated or standard interferon alfa
