What is Rebetol Used for?

Rebetol (Ribavirin) is a prescription medicine used with interferon alfa-2b (pegylated and nonpegylated) to treat people with chronic hepatitis B or C infection (a viral infection of the liver). It is also used to treat infants and young children who have a severe lung infection caused by respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). The active substance in Rebetol is Ribavirin. Ribavirin belongs to the class of medication called nucleoside analogues. It works by inhibiting the initiation and elongation of RNA fragments by inhibiting polymerase activity, which in turn results in the inhibition of viral protein synthesis. By this mechanism of action, it stops the virus that causes hepatitis C from spreading inside the body.
