Protopic Ointment (Tacrolimus) is a prescription ointment that is used for the treatment of a skin condition called eczema in patients who have not responded to other eczema treatments. Tacrolimus belongs to a class of drugs known as topical calcineurin inhibitors (TCIs). Protopic Ointment works by weakening the skin’s immune system. This decreases the allergic reaction and relieves the eczema.

The common side effects may include burning, flu-like symptoms, headache, itching, soreness, sore throat, stinging and upset stomach. The serious side effects may include:

• Appearance of skin infections;

• Back joint or muscle pain;

• Chest pain;

• Unusual tiredness

Are there any Precautions or Drug Interactions for Protopic Ointment?


You should not use Protopic Ointment if you are allergic to Tacrolimus or if you have any other allergies. Before you start taking this medication, talk to your doctor about your medical history and about all the medications you take including OTC and herbal medications. This medication may make you more sensitive to the effects of alcohol. You should limit your alcohol intake. This medication should not be used during pregnancy. This medication passes into breast milk and may have effects on a nursing infant. Protopic ointment is not indicated for use in children younger than 2 years of age. Only Protopic 0.03% ointment can be used in children 2 to 15 years of age. Avoid continuous long-term use of Protopic ointment, in any age group, and limit application to areas of involvement with atopic dermatitis. Protopic ointment may interact with other medications such as immunosuppressants, cyclosporine and methotrexate.

Protopic Ointment Safety and Storage Information


Protopic Ointment should be stored at room temperature at 77 degrees F away from light and moisture and out of reach of children and pets. This ointment can be stored briefly at a temperature between 59-86 degrees F. Do not store this ointment in the bathroom.
