What is Promacta Used for?

Promacta (Eltrombopag Olamine) is a prescription medicine used to treat low platelet levels in people with blood disorders like chronic immune (idiopathic) thrombocytopenia purpura (ITP), or chronic hepatitis C. Platelets are a type of blood cell that form blood clots and prevent bleeding. Promacta may also be used with other medications to treat people with aplastic anemia. The active ingredient in Promacta is Eltrombopag Olamine. Eltrombopag Olamine belongs to a class of drugs called thrombopoietin receptor agonists. It works by causing the cells in the bone marrow to produce more platelets.

Are there any Precautions and Drug Interactions for Promacta?

Before using this medication, you should tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to Promacta or have other problems when using Eltrombopag Olamine. It is crucial to continue using this medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Promacta comes as a tablet and oral suspension powder. Swallow the tablet whole. Do not crush, chew, or mix with food or liquid. Mix the oral suspension powder with cool or cold water. Use a new dosing syringe each time you mix the medicine to measure the water and give the correct dose. Take the oral suspension immediately after mixing. If it is not used within 30 minutes, throw it away in the trash. You may take Promacta on an empty stomach at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after eating. You can also take it with a meal containing less than 50 milligrams of calcium. If the meal is high in calcium (dairy products, certain fruits, and vegetables), take the drug at least 2 hours before or 4 hours after eating. Promacta may increase your risk of bleeding or injury. Take extra care while shaving, brushing, or doing activities that may increase your risk of bleeding for at least 4 weeks after you stop taking the drug.

You should not use Promacta and inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have or have had:
• Bleeding problems;
• Blood cancer;
• Cataracts;
• History of blood clots;
• Kidney disease;
• Liver disease

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant. Promacta may harm an unborn baby. Use effective birth control while using Promacta and for at least 7 days after your last dose. Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding. It is not known if Eltrombopag Olamine passes into breast milk or if it may harm your nursing infant. Promacta is safe for use in children. Dosage will be based on the child's weight. Do not give this drug to children without talking to your doctor.

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements, to prevent drug interactions that might be fatal to your health. This drug interaction may make your drug less effective, cause adverse effects, or potentiate other drugs' actions. There may be a drug interaction between Promacta and other drugs, such as:
• Acetaminophen;
• Antacids containing magnesium, calcium, or aluminum;
• Ciprofloxacin;
• Efavirenz;
• Ethinyl estradiol;
