What is the Proin Used for?

Proin (Phenylpropanolamine Hydrochloride) is a prescription medicine used to control urinary incontinence in dogs. Urinary incontinence in dogs may result from urinary tract infections, prostate disorders, neurological disease, or spinal injuries. Proin will not effectively treat dogs with incontinence due to neurologic disease or malformations. This drug may also be used off-label to treat urinary incontinence in cats. Off- or extra-label use means a medication can be used in a way or in a particular species not specified on the medication label. Only a veterinarian with direct and personal knowledge of your pet should prescribe this medicine. This medicine is prescribed off- or extra-label if there are no other appropriate medications for a particular pet's circumstances. The active ingredient in Proin is Phenylpropanolamine Hydrochloride. Phenylpropanolamine Hydrochloride belongs to a class of drugs called sympathomimetic amines. It works by stimulating the smooth muscles of the urethra, bladder neck, and urethral sphincter to increase tone and closing the neck of the bladder to control incontinence.

What are the Possible Side Effects of Proin?

If your dog experiences any of the following common side effects, contact your veterinarian or pharmacist immediately:
• Appetite loss;
• Diarrhea;
• Increased thirst;
• Lethargy;
• Panting

Stop administering Proin and contact your veterinarian right away if your dog has any of the severe side effects such as:
• Abnormal heart rhythm;
• Insomnia;
• Irritability;
• Restlessness

This is not a complete list of the adverse effects of Proin. Kindly reach out to your veterinarian or pharmacist if any of the above-listed side effects last longer than usual or get worse.

Are there any Precautions and Drug Interactions for Proin?

Before administering this medication, tell your veterinarian or pharmacist if your dog is allergic to Proin or has other problems when using Phenylpropanolamine Hydrochloride. It is crucial to continue using this medication exactly as your veterinarian prescribes. Proin comes as a chewable tablet. Ensure that your dog takes the full dose. Administer this drug orally to your dog. You can give your dog this medicine with or without food. However, giving the drug with food may prevent digestive system upset. Proin can increase thirst. Provide enough water for your dog after administering the medication. If your dog's incontinence occurs at night, administer the largest dose before it goes to sleep. Proin works almost immediately. You should see improvements in about 1 to 2 hours. Monitor your dog's blood pressure regularly when it starts using Proin, then at least twice yearly. This drug is not for human use. Wash your hands thoroughly after administering the medication. In case of accidental ingestion, contact your doctor immediately.

You should not administer Proin and inform your veterinarian about your dog's medical history, especially if it has or has had:
• Diabetes;
• Elevated thyroid disorder;
• Glaucoma;
• High blood pressure;
• Kidney disease;
• Musculoskeletal disorder;
• Neurologic disease;

Tell your veterinarian if your dog is pregnant, breeding, or lactating. It is unknown if Proin will harm a pregnant, breeding, or lactating dog.

Tell your veterinarian about all the medications your dog uses, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements, to prevent drug interactions that might be fatal to your dog's health. This drug interaction may make your drug less effective, cause adverse effects, or potentiate other drugs' actions. There may be a drug interaction between Proin and other drugs, such as aspirin, reserpine, sevoflurane, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, etc.
