What Dosages And Forms Is Podofilm Available In?

The medication Podofilm is available as a topical liquid in the dosage form of 25% per 25 mL. This liquid contains podophyllin 250 mg/mL supplied as podophyllum resin 25% in an adherent film-forming vehicle.

What Is Podofilm Used For?

Podofilm is used for the removal of benign (non-cancerous) skin growths called as warts such as venereal warts (condylomata acuminata), common warts (verruca vulgaris), and benign papillomas such as granuloma inguinale and plantar warts. Few hours after application of this liquid preparation to a wart, the wart becomes blanched (loses all its color). In 24 to 48 hours, this medication causes the death of the tissue. After 72 hours, the wart begins to come off and gradually disappears. This liquid medication is usually applied in doctors' office because it is a poison and can cause serious side effects if not used properly. However, your doctor may also ask you to apply this medication at home, hence be sure to understand how to use it exactly.

What Are The Possible Side Effects Of Podofilm?

The most systemic common side effects of Podofilm include rash, itching, temporary fever, burning or prickling sensation that is usually felt in the hands, arms, legs, or feet, polyneuritis (a disorder that affects peripheral nerves), constipation, abdominal distention, and nausea and vomiting, decrease in number of white blood cells, decrease in number of platelets, coma and death. Local side effects include severe death of most or all of the cells in an organ or tissue, scarring of genital area, paraphimosis (a condition that only affects uncircumcised males and develops when the foreskin can no longer be pulled forward over the tip of the penis which causes the foreskin to become swollen and stuck, which may slow or stop the flow of blood to the tip of the penis), pseudoepitheliomatous hyperplasia .

Are there any Precautions and Drug interactions for Podofilm?

Podofilm is extremely potent and is to be applied only by the doctor. Care must be used in the selection of the patients to be treated with Podofilm and the method to be used. In order to avoid toxicity, it is recommended to apply the preparation to small areas of skin. Do not use on tongue, eyes and other mucus membranes such as inside of the nose, mouth, cervix, vagina or anal canal. Do not use Podofilm if the area surrounding the growth is irritated, infected or reddened. Do not use on diabetic patients or patients with poor blood circulation, nor on moles, birthmarks, or unusual warts with hair growing from them. Podofilm should not be used in conditions where the genital warts are either florid with a large surface area or very hemorrhagic that absorption of toxin into the body is possible. Do not treat large areas at one time since discomfort may be excessive and can result in absorption into the body. Do not use the product near heat, open flame, or while smoking.

The use of Podofilm during pregnancy or by nursing mothers is not recommended since there have been no studies conducted with the use of Podofilm in pregnant or nursing women. It is recommended to advise the patients about the effects and possible results of the treatment. Care must be exercised when applying the drug so that the adjacent area is not affected. Normal skin adjacent to the lesion should be protected with petrolatum.

Podofilm is a strong vesicant and may produce blisters if it comes in contact with normal skin or mucus membrane. If it gets spilled on skin, wipe off at once, with acetone, alcohol or tape remover. Then wash thoroughly with warm soapy water and rinse well. If it gets spilled on mucus membranes or eyes, flush with water and remove the precipitated film, and flush with water for an additional 15 minutes. It is advisable to treat one or two lesions during the first visit until the sensitivity of the patient is known. It is meant for external use only.
