Penicillin Tablets are indicated for mild to moderate infections caused by penicillin V sensitive organisms including streptococcal pharyngitis, staphylococcal infection without bacteremia and pneumococcal infections (mild to moderate infections of respiratory tract), streptococcal infections without bacteremia such as mild to moderate infections of upper respiratory tract, scarlet fever (a bacterial illness that develops in people who have strep throat) and mild erysipelas. It is also used for the treatment of staphylococcal infections such as mild infections of the skin and soft tissue, fusospirochetosis (mild to moderately severe infections of the oropharynx such as Vincent’s Gingivitis, and Pharyngitis. In addition, it is used for the prophylaxis of rheumatic fever (a complication of strep throat) and/or chorea (a neurological disorder characterized by jerky involuntary movements affecting especially the shoulders, hips, and face). It is also used to prevent bacterial endocarditis (an infection caused by the bacteria in the blood vessel or heart), and prevention of bacteremia after tooth extraction.

What Are The Possible Side Effects Of Penicillin Tablets?


Most common side effects caused by patients taking Penicillin Tablets include all degrees of allergic reactions including fatal anaphylaxis, nausea, vomiting, epigastric distress, diarrhea and black hairy tongue. The allergic reactions include skin eruptions, skin rashes, and reactions resembling serum sickness, including chills, fever, anaphylaxis, and edema. Some other side effects include an increase in a number of eosinophils (a type of white blood cells) in blood, hemolytic anemia (destruction of red blood cells), low blood platelet count, weakness, numbness, and pain in nerves, and nephropathy. Are there any Precautions and Drug interactions for Penicillin Tablets?


Infections, such as severe pneumonia, empyema (collection of pus in the fluid around the lungs), bacteremia, pericarditis (swelling and inflammation in fluid around lungs), arthritis and meningitis (inflammation and swelling of the brain and spinal cord membrane) should not be treated with this medication in the acute stage.

• Have infections caused by beta-lactamase producing organisms

• Have subacute bacterial endocarditis

• Diptheria (a serious bacterial infection that affects the membranes of throat and nose)

• Gas gangrene (rapidly spreading gangrene affecting injured tissue infected by a soil bacterium and accompanied by the evolution of foul-smelling gas)

• Have other severe infections due to other penicillin-susceptible organisms

Before taking Penicillin Tablets always talk to your healthcare professional in case you:

• Have or had serious or fatal hypersensitive reactions on treatment with penicillin

• Are taking antibiotics known as cephalosporins

• Have or had a history of allergies and/or asthma

• Have severe illness with nausea, vomiting, gastric dilation, increased motility of intestines or cardiospasm (a rare disorder making it difficult for food and liquid to pass into the stomach)

Prolonged use of antibiotics can lead to overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms including fungi. Appropriate measures should be taken in case of a super infection.
