Norgestimate belongs to a class of drugs called progestins. Ethinyl Estradiol belongs to a class of medications called estrogens. They work by preventing ovulation (the release of an egg from an ovary). They also cause changes in your cervical mucus and uterine lining, making it harder for sperm to reach the uterus and harder for a fertilized egg to attach to the uterus.

Are there any Precautions and Drug Interactions for Ortho Tri-Cyclen?

Before using this medication, you should tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to Ortho Tri-Cyclen or have other problems when using Norgestimate or Ethinyl Estradiol. It is crucial to continue using this medication exactly as your doctor prescribes. Ortho Tri-Cyclen comes as a tablet. Take this medication by mouth, with or without food, as directed by your doctor. You will take your first pill on the first day of your period or the first Sunday after your period begins. You may need to use back-up birth control, such as condoms, when you first start using Ortho Tri-Cyclen. Take one pill every day, no more than 24 hours apart. You may get pregnant if you do not take one pill daily. You may have breakthrough bleeding, especially during the first three months. Tell your doctor if this bleeding continues or is very heavy. Use back-up birth control if you are sick with severe vomiting or diarrhea. If you need major surgery with long-term bed rest, you may need to stop using this medicine for a short time. Although Ortho Tri-Cyclen can be used to treat acne, it should only be used if you desire an oral contraceptive for birth control. Do not smoke while taking Ortho Tri-Cyclen. It can increase your risk of blood clots. Ortho Tri-Cyclen will not protect you from sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV and AIDS. Using a condom is the only way to protect yourself from these diseases.

You should not use Ortho Tri-Cyclen and inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have or have had:
• Abnormal mammogram;
• Diabetes;
• Gallbladder disease;
• Heart problems;
• High cholesterol;
• Irregular menstrual cycles;
• Kidney disease;
• Liver disease;
• Migraine headaches

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant. Do not use this drug when pregnant because it can harm your unborn baby. Stop using this medicine and tell your doctor right away if you become pregnant or if you miss two menstrual periods in a row. If you have recently had a baby, wait at least four weeks before taking birth control pills. Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding. Norgestimate and Ethinyl Estradiol pass into breast milk and may slow milk production. Ortho Tri-Cyclen is not safe for use in children below 15 years of age.

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements, to prevent drug interactions that might be fatal to your health. This drug interaction may make your drug less effective, cause adverse effects, or potentiate other drugs' actions. There may be a drug interaction between Ortho Tri-Cyclen and other drugs, such as:
• Levothyroxine;
• Lorazepam;
• Metformin;
• Propranolol;
• Topiramate
