What is Nystatin Used for?


Nystatin (Mycostatin) is a prescription medicine used to treat oral infections caused by a family of yeast-like fungi called Candida. The active ingredient in Nystatin is Mycostatin. Mycostatin belongs to the class of medicine called antifungal. It works by stopping the growth of fungus by binding sterols in the fungal cell membrane, altering permeability and thus causing cellular contents to leak. Nystatin suspension should not be used to treat fungal infections of the blood.

What are the Possible Side Effects of Nystatin?


If you experience any of the following common side effects, contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately:
• Diarrhea;
• Hypersensitivity reactions;
• Nausea;
• Stomach pain;
• Vomiting

Stop using Nystatin and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the severe side effects such as:
• A new fungal infection;

Are there any Precautions and Drug Interactions for Nystatin?

Shake well before use, and to carefully calculate the dosage, use the drug dropper given. Use as follows, unless otherwise instructed by your doctor:
• Take the lid off and measure out the right amount using an oral syringe, medicine spoon, or dropper. Do not use a kitchen teaspoon as it will not give you the right amount.
• Put the medicine in your mouth.
• Keep it in your mouth for at least 30 seconds if possible, using it like mouthwash before you swallow it.
• Do not eat or drink anything for 30 minutes after taking it. This stops you from washing the medicine out of your mouth too soon
• Wash your dropper with hot water. Return the dropper to the bottle tighten the lid.

Use this drug as prescribed by your doctor 4 times a day or as instructed. Completion of the treatment may take several days to several months. To get the most benefits from it, use this drug daily. Remember to do it each day at the same time. The dosage is dependent on your medical condition and therapy reaction. If you are wearing dentures, you need to properly clean and maintain your dentures during treatment with this medication. If your symptoms do not improve after a few days of treatment or return soon after you have completed your treatment, inform your doctor immediately.

You should not take Nystatin and inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have or have had:
• An unusual or allergic reaction to Nystatin, ethylenediamine, parabens, thimerosal, other foods, dyes, or preservatives;
• Diabetes mellitus;
• HIV/AIDS;
• Kidney disease

You should tell your doctor if you become pregnant or plan to become pregnant while taking Mycostatin oral suspension. During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when needed. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. It is not known whether this drug passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding. Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements to prevent drug interactions, which might be fatal to your health. This drug interaction may make your drug less effective, cause adverse effects, or potentiate other drugs' action. However, Mycostatin liquid is generally safe to use when taking other medicines, including painkillers.

Nystatin Storage and Safety Information


Store at room temperature between 15 and 25 °C (59 and 77 °F). Protect from light. Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date in your trash can. Keep out of the reach of children.
