What is Nucala Used for?

Nucala (Mepolizumab) is a prescription medicine used to treat people from 6 years and above with severe eosinophilic asthma, eosinophilic granulomatosis, and hypereosinophilic syndrome. Nucala may also be used with other drugs to treat people with severe or poorly controlled asthma. The active substance in Nucala is mepolizumab. Mepolizumab belongs to the group of medicine called Interleukin Inhibitors, Monoclonal Antibodies, and Anti-asthmatics. It works by attaching to interleukin-5, which encourages the production and survival of eosinophils. It blocks its action and reduces the number of eosinophils. This helps to reduce inflammation, resulting in an improvement of symptoms. It would be best to know that Nucala should not be used to treat sudden breathing problems as it does not work as a reliever.

What are the Possible Side Effects of Nucala?

If you experience any of the following common side effects, contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately:
• Back pain;
• Diarrhea;
• Fatigue;
• Headache;
• Injection site reaction (pain);
• Nasal congestion;
• Upper abdominal pain

Stop using Nucala and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the severe side effects such as:
• Recurrent chest infection;
• Symptoms of allergic reaction such as body rash, chest tightness, cough, difficulty breathing, fainting, dizziness, feeling lightheaded, swelling of the body part;
• Worsening of symptoms while receiving treatment with Nucala

This is not a complete list of the adverse effect of Nucala. Kindly reach out to your doctor or pharmacist if any of the above-listed side effects last longer than usual or get worse.

Are there any Precautions and Drug Interactions for Nucala?

Before taking this medication, you should tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to Nucala or have other problems receiving Nucala injections. Nucala medication comes as a powder for injection solution and should be administered by a doctor in a hospital setting. You may also inject this medication yourself if you use the solution in a prefilled pen or syringe or as a powder that comes in a vial and is made up into an injection. It is crucial to continue taking this medication exactly as your doctor prescribes. Nucala injection is given under the skin of the upper arm, thigh or abdomen (belly) once every four weeks. The recommended dose depends on the use and the age of the patient.

You should not stop your corticosteroid (for treating asthma) if your doctor did not instruct you. Nucala should not be used as a rescuer or inhaler in case of sudden difficulty with breathing. Inform the doctor if your asthma remains uncontrolled or worsens after you start Nucala treatment.

You should not take Nucala and inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have or have had:
• Acute bronchospasm;
• Kidney disease;
• Liver problem;
• Lung cancer;
• Obstructive airway diseases such as COPD;
• Tuberculosis

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant; if you think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor for advice before starting the Nucala injection. It is unknown whether the ingredients (mepolizumab) of Nucala can pass into breast milk. Therefore, if you are breastfeeding, you should check with your doctor before you use Nucala.

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements, to prevent drug interactions which might be fatal to your health. This drug interaction may make your drug less effective, cause adverse effects, or potentiate other drugs' actions. There may be a drug interaction between Nucala and other drugs such as:
• Fexinidazole;
• Vaccination/immunization
