What is the Nidagel Used for?

Nidagel (Metronidazole) is a prescription medication used to treat bacterial vaginosis. Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a common vaginal infection caused by an imbalance of bacteria in the vagina. It presents with a thin, gray, or white discharge with a fishy odor and can increase the risk of other infections. Nidagel is also used in some cases to reduce the redness and inflammation associated with rosacea. The active ingredient in Nidagel is Metronidazole. Metronidazole belongs to a class of drugs called antimicrobials. It works by killing bacteria and parasites.

What are the Possible Side Effects of Nidagel?

Stop using Nidagel and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the severe side effects such as:

Are there any precautions or drug interactions for Nidagel?

Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to Nidagel or have other problems when using Nidagel. It is crucial to continue using this medication exactly as your doctor prescribes. Nidagel comes as a vaginal gel. Do not take this medication by mouth. Wash your hands with soap before and after using Nidagel. For bacterial vaginosis, fill the applicator with your prescribed dose, lie on your back with your knees bent, and gently insert the applicator high into your vagina. Slowly push the plunger to release the medication. Remove the applicator and wash it thoroughly with warm, soapy water. Apply Nidagel according to your doctor’s instructions. Avoid sexual intercourse while using the medicine or use a condom. You can use sanitary napkins to protect your clothing from any discharge. If treating rosacea, wash your face with a mild cleanser and pat it dry. Apply a thin layer of the medication to the affected areas, avoiding your eyes, lips, and mouth. Use sunscreen and limit sun exposure, as sunlight can exacerbate rosacea. Even if your symptoms improve, complete the entire course of treatment to prevent recurrence. Do not consume alcohol during treatment and for at least 24 hours after the last dose. Alcohol can increase the side effects of Metronidazole.

You should not use Nidagel and inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have or have had:
• Allergies;
• Blood disorders;
• Hypoadrenalism;
• Hypothyroidism;
• Liver disease;
• Neurological disorders;

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant. Using Metronidazole in your first trimester can harm an unborn baby. Discuss the benefits and risks of using this medicine in pregnancy with your doctor. Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding. Metronidazole passes into breast milk, and it may harm a nursing infant. Your doctor may recommend pumping and discarding breastmilk during the timeframe when the drug levels are highest in the milk. This allows a nursing mother to continue producing milk and resume breastfeeding once the medication has cleared from her system. Nidagel is not safe for use in children.

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements, to prevent drug interactions that might be fatal to your health. This drug interaction may make your drug less effective, cause adverse effects, or potentiate other drugs' actions. There may be a drug interaction between Nidagel and other drugs, such as warfarin, lithium, phenytoin, cimetidine, disulfiram, etc.
