What is Mycobutin Used for?

Mycobutin (Rifabutin) is a prescription medicine used alone or in combination with other antitubercular medication to help prevent a certain serious infection (Mycobacterium avium complex-MAC) in patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and other atypical and multidrug-resistant mycobacteria. The active ingredient in Mycobutin is Rifabutin, also known as a rifamycin antibiotic. Rifabutin belongs to a class of medication called antituberculosis. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria. These antibiotics treat and prevent only bacterial infections. It will not work for viral infections (such as the common cold and flu). Using any antibiotic when it is unnecessary can cause it to not work for future infections.

What are the Possible Side Effects of Mycobutin?

If you experience any of the following common side effects, contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately:
• Anorexia;
• Abdominal pain;
• Diarrhea;
• Discoloration of urine;
• Flatulence;
• Headache;
• Nausea and vomiting

Stop using Mycobutin and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the severe side effects such as:
• Anemia or feeling dizzy due to low level of blood;
• Persistent diarrhea;
• Recurrent chest infection;
• Severe cutaneous adverse reactions such as SJS, TEN, and acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis;
• Severe eye redness, small white or yellow patches on the surface of your eye

This is not a complete list of the adverse effects of Mycobutin. Kindly contact your doctor or pharmacist if any of the above-listed side effects last longer than usual or worsen.

Are there any Precautions and Drug Interactions for Mycobutin?

Before taking rifabutin, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it, have other Rifamycins (such as rifampin), or have any other allergies. Mycobutin is a tablet, and it should be taken orally with or without food as directed by your doctor, usually once or twice daily. Take this medication with food if stomach upset occurs. For the treatment of tuberculosis, this drug is sometimes taken twice weekly. Mycobutin is sometimes used in combination with other medications to treat active tuberculosis (TB, a severe lung infection). Talk to your doctor about the risks of using this medication for your condition. Follow your prescription label carefully, and do not miss your clinic appointment. Inform your doctor if your condition is worsening or if there is no significant improvement despite being compliant with medication and clinic visits.

You should not take Mycobutin and inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have or have had:
• A history of an eye condition called uveitis;
• Heart diseases;
• HIV/AIDs;
• Kidney disease;
• Liver disease (including hepatitis B infection)

Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or breastfeeding a child. During pregnancy, antitubercular drugs such as Mycobutin should be used only when needed. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. It is unknown if this medication passes into breast milk. If you have HIV, breast milk may transmit HIV. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements, to prevent drug interactions that might be fatal to your health. This drug interaction may make your drug less effective, cause adverse effects, or potentiate other drugs' actions. There may be a drug interaction between Mycobutin and other drugs, such as:
• Apixaban;
• Cabotegravir;
• Elbasvir/grazoprevir;
• Naloxegol;
• Pacritinib;
• Roflumilast;
• Vandetanib;
• Voriconazole
