Levaquin is available as tablets in the dosage form of 500 mg in the packaging of 14 tablets. The generic equivalent of Levaquin (levofloxacin) is available in the dosage forms of 250 mg, 500 mg and 750 mg in the packaging of 100 tablets.

What Is Levaquin Used For?


Levaquin belongs to the class of antibiotics known as fluoroquinolone and is used in adults aged 18 years or above for treatment of bacterial infections such as nosocomial pneumonia, plaque, community-acquired pneumonia, urinary tract infections, skin infections, acute kidney infection, chronic prostate infection, acute sinus infection, acute worsening of chronic bronchitis and inhalation anthrax germs. Levaquin should not be used in patients with uncomplicated urinary tract infection, acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis or acute bacterial sinusitis if other treatment options are available. Levaquin is also used to treat children who weigh at least 66 pounds and may have breathed in anthrax germs, have plague, or have been exposed to plague germs. The safety and efficacy of Levaquin are not known in children under 6 months of age. The safety and effectiveness in children treated with Levaquin for more than 14 days are not known.

What Are The Possible Side Effects Of Levaquin?


Some of the common side effects that can occur after taking nausea, headache, insomnia, diarrhea, constipation, and dizziness. In children 6 months and older who take Levaquin to treat anthrax disease or plague, vomiting is also common. Serious side effects of Levaquin include allergic reactions, liver damage, heart rhythm changes, intestine infection, joint problems, changes in blood sugar, sensitivity to light. You should stop taking the medication and contact your doctor immediately if you have rupture or swelling of tendons, changes in sensation and possible nerve damage, worsening of myasthenia gravis, and effects on the central nervous system such as changes in mood, seizures, restlessness, confusion, and depression. These are not all the possible side effects of Levaquin. In case of any unexpected effect, contact your healthcare professional right away.

Are there any Precautions and Drug interactions for Levaquin?


Levaquin can cause dizziness and light-headedness and therefore you should not drive a car or operate machinery until you know how this medication affects you. Levaquin can make your skin sensitive to sun and light from sunlamps and tanning beds, causing severe burn or blisters on your skin. Avoid sunlamps, tanning beds and limit your exposure to the sun. You should wear a sunscreen and hat and clothes that cover your skin in sunlight.
Levaquin should not be used if you are allergic to levofloxacin or other fluoroquinolones or any other ingredients in the medication.

Before using Levaquin, tell your healthcare professional if you:

• Have tendon problems

• Have a problem that causes muscle weakness

• Have central nervous system problems such as seizures

• Have nerve problems

• Have a family or personal history of irregular heartbeat, especially a condition known as QT prolongation

• Have low blood potassium

• Have bone problems

• Have joint problems including rheumatoid arthritis

• Have kidney or liver problems

• Have diabetes or problems with low blood sugar

• Are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. It is not known if Levaquin will harm your unborn baby

• Are breastfeeding. It is not known if Levaquin passes into breast milk. You and your healthcare professional should decide if you will take Levaquin or breastfeed. You should not do both.

If you see a different doctor, inform him or her that you are using Levaquin.

Drug interactions


You should always tell your health care professional about any medications that you have been taking or are going to take including prescription and non-prescription drugs, vitamins and herbal supplements. Drugs that can interact with Levaquin include:

• Steroid medicines

• Antipsychotic medicines

• Tricyclic antidepressants

• Water pills (diuretics)

• Antacids, multivitamins or supplements containing magnesium, aluminum, iron or zinc. Sucralfate, didanosine

• Blood thinning agents such as warfarin

• Oral anti-diabetic medications or insulin

• Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS)

• Theophylline, used for the treatment of asthma and COPD

• Medicines to control your heart rate or rhythm (antiarrhythmics)

Levaquin Storage and Safety Information


The spray should be stored at a room temperature between 15°C to 30°C, in a tightly closed container. It should be kept out of the reach and sight of children.
