What Is Isopto Carpine Used For?


Isopto Carpine is used for the treatment of a condition called glaucoma (high pressure of the fluid in the eye). This medication is used either alone or in combination with other eye drops for the treatment of glaucoma. It acts by lowering the pressure in the eye by allowing more fluid to flow out from the eye. What Are The Possible Side Effects Of Isopto Carpine?


Tell your doctor immediately if you do not feel well after taking this medication. Some of the common side effects of Isopto Carpine include burning, redness, irritation, itching, and stinging in the eye, blurred vision, or difficulty focusing the eye, swelling of the eye or eyelid, pain in the eye, a feeling that something is in the eye, glare, short-sightedness, poor night vision, narrowing or blocking of the pupil, decrease in the amount of fluid able to be released from the eye, browache or a headache. Other symptoms include internal bleeding of the eye, tearing of the retina (inner surface of the eye), and contraction of the pupil. Occasionally, some people might notice some side effects in the rest of their body such as dizziness, high blood pressure, fast heart rate, changes in breathing (wheezing or asthma), increased production of saliva, sweating, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea. These are not all the possible side effects of Isopto Carpine. In case of any unexpected effect, contact your healthcare professional right away.

Are there any Precautions and Drug interactions for Isopto Carpine?


Isopto Carpine generally does not cause any problems with one's ability to drive a car or operate machinery. It may, however, cause blurred or decreased vision in some people, particularly under poor lighting conditions. Make sure you know how you react to this medication or that your vision is clear before driving a car or operating machinery.

Do not put the eye drops into your eye(s) while you are wearing soft contact lenses. The preservative in this medication (benzalkonium chloride) may be deposited in soft contact lenses causing eye irritation or discoloration of lenses. It is best to avoid the use of contacts during your treatment. If you require the use of your lenses you can put your soft contact lenses back into your eyes 15 minutes after you have used Isopto Carpine.

Do not take Isopto Carpine if you:

• Are allergic to pilocarpine or clonidine any other ingredients in Isopto Carpine
• Have been diagnosed with a condition known as iritis, an inflammation of the colored part of the eye
• Have a certain type of glaucoma, called as pupillary block glaucoma
• Are currently taking any monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) or tricyclic antidepressants
• Are currently taking any sympathomimetic medications (drugs used to treat asthma, severe headaches or coughs and colds may belong to this class of medicines).

Before taking Isopto Carpine, inform your doctor if you:

• Have or had any allergy to other medicines or any other substances such as foods, preservatives, and dyes.
• Are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Your doctor will discuss the possible risks and benefits of using this medication during pregnancy.
• Are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. Your doctor will discuss the possible risks and benefits of using this medication when breastfeeding.
• Have Parkinson’s disease, thyroid disease
• Have high or low blood pressure or any heart disease
• Have an obstruction of the urinary tract
• Have breathing difficulties or lung problems such as asthma
• Have peptic ulcers
• Have retinal diseases, short-sightedness, corneal or conjunctival damage
• Do not use in children unless specifically directed by your doctor
