What is Intelence Used for?


Intelence (Etravirine) is a prescription medicine used to help control HIV infection and prevents the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) from multiplying in your body so that your immune system can work better. The active ingredient in the Intelence tablet is Etravirine. Etravirine belongs to the group of medicine called antiviral agents (non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTIs)). It works by binding directly to reverse transcriptase and blocks RNA-dependent and DNA-dependent DNA polymerase activities by disrupting the enzyme's catalytic sites. Intelence Oral tablets do not cure HIV/AIDS and do not prevent you from transmitting the disease.

What are the Possible Side Effects of Intelence?


If you experience any of the following common side effects, contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately:
• Diarrhea;
• Fatigue;
• Gastrointestinal disorders such as abdominal pain, the passage of dark-colored stool;
• Increased creatinine;
• Nausea;

Are there any Precautions and Drug Interactions for Intelence?


It would be best if you inform your doctor before taking Etravirine tablets. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it, or have any other allergies. Take Intelence precisely as prescribed by your doctor. To decrease your risk of spreading HIV to others, continue taking all HIV medications exactly as prescribed by your doctor and following all directions on your prescription label. Use an effective barrier method (latex or polyurethane condoms) during sexual activity as directed by your doctor. Do not share personal items (needles/syringes, toothbrushes, and razors) that may have contacted blood or other body fluids. Do not take this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended. Intelence must be taken in combination with other HIV medications. If a child is taking this medication, tell your doctor if the child has any weight changes. While using Intelence, you may need frequent blood tests at your doctor's office.

You should not take Intelence and inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have or have had:
• Heart diseases;
• History of depression/suicidal thoughts;
• Kidney disease;
• Liver disease (including hepatitis B infection, Hepatitis C infection);
• Low blood pressure or you are using antihypertensive medicines

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, and use your drugs as prescribed to control your infection. HIV can be passed to your baby if the virus is not controlled during pregnancy. Women with Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. HIV can be passed to your baby if you are not properly treated during pregnancy. Take all of your HIV medicines as directed to control your infection. Women with HIV or AIDS should not breastfeed a baby. If your baby is born without HIV, the virus may be passed to the baby in your breast milk. Children may be more sensitive to the side effects of this drug, especially rash.

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements to prevent drug interactions, which might be fatal to your health. This drug interaction may make your drug less effective, cause adverse effects, or potentiate other drugs' action. There may be a drug interaction between Intelence and other drugs such as:
• Artemether and lumefantrine;
• Anticoagulants such as warfarin, Coumadin;
• An antifungal medicine - itraconazole, ketoconazole, Posaconazole;
• Delavirdine;
• Drugs used to prevent organ transplant rejection - cyclosporine, sirolimus, tacrolimus;
• Efavirenz;
Medicine for erectile dysfunction or pulmonary arterial hypertension - sildenafil, tadalafil, vardenafil;
• Narcotic medication - buprenorphine, methadone;
• Nevirapine;
• Rifabutin, rifapentine, rifampin;
• Rilpivirine;
• Ritonavir in doses of more than 600 milligrams twice daily;
• Ritonavir when given with fosamprenavir or tipranavir;
• Seizure medications such as carbamazepine, phenytoin, phenobarbital.
