What is Exelon Patch used for?

Exelon Patch (generic name Rivastigmine) is a cholinesterase inhibitor and is used for the treatment of patients with mild to moderately severe Alzheimer’s disease. Patients with Alzheimer’s disease have decreased levels of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter found in brain and is essential for memory and other mental functions. Exelon patch works by inhibiting an enzyme called acetylcholinesterase which breaks down acetylcholine. Thus, this helps in increasing the amount of acetylcholine in brain. You should follow the instructions of the doctor who prescribed Exelon Patch to you. Directions and dosage information can also be found on the pack or leaflet inside the pack. Only one patch should be worn at a time and the patch should be replaced with a new one every 24 hours. Do not cut the patch into pieces. Exelon patch will not work properly or may not be safe if it is damaged in any way. Your doctor will advise you which Exelon patch is more suitable for you. Treatment usually starts with Exelon patch 5 applied once a day. The usual dose is Exelon patch 10 or Exelon patch 15 applied once a day, depending on individual condition.
