What is Enstilar used for?


Enstilar is a prescription medication which is used on the skin only for the treatment of plaque psoriasis in adults of 18 years and above. Enstilar contains two medications calcipotriol and betamethasone that work together to control psoriasis. Psoriasis causes areas of inflamed skin where skin cells grow too fast. This creates red, scaly, thick patches (plaques) of skin. Calcipotriol is a vitamin D-like substance that helps to bring the rate of skin cell growth back to normal. Betamethasone is a corticosteroid that works to reduce inflammation (redness, swelling and itching). You should use Enstilar foam exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not use more than 60 g of Enstilar foam every 4 days. Apply Enstilar foam to the affected areas of your skin one time a day for up to 4 weeks. The maximum weekly dose of Enstilar (including other products containing calcipotriol) is 100g. Do not use this foam on your face, groin or underarms. The safety and efficacy of Enstilar foam are not known in children.

What Are The Possible Side Effects of Enstilar?


Some of the common side effects of Enstilar include irritation, itching, inflammation, changes in skin color, rashes, worsening of psoriasis, burning or stinging sensation, acne, small white spots, thinning skin, stretch marks, red and swollen hair follicles, changes in hair growth. Some serious side effects of this medication include too much calcium in your blood and urine, adrenal gland problems, skin problems, allergic reactions. These are not all the possible side effects of Enstilar. In case of any unexpected effect, consult your healthcare professional immediately.

Are there any Precautions and Drug interactions for Enstilar?


Avoid spending a long time in the sunlight. Avoid tanning booths and sunlamps while using Enstilar foam. Do not bandage, cover or wrap the treated skin area after applying Enstilar. Do not use Enstilar foam on areas with rash around the mouth, thin skin, stretch marks, fragile veins, dry scaly skin, acne, rosacea, ulcers, wounds, and a type of psoriasis with severe inflammation or psoriasis with pus-filled blisters.

Do not use Enstilar foam if you:

• Are allergic to calcipotriol and betamethasone or any other ingredients in the medication
• Have a condition that affects your calcium levels
• Have a skin infection caused by a virus, fungi, bacteria or parasite
• Have a skin condition related to tuberculosis

Before taking Enstilar, inform your doctor if you:

• Have calcium metabolism disorder
• Are getting phototherapy (light treatments) for psoriasis
• Are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. It is not known whether Enstilar foam can harm your unborn baby
• Are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. It is not known if Enstilar foam passes into your breast milk. Do not use Enstilar foam on your breast if you breastfeed.
• Have liver or kidney problems
• Are over the age of 65 years
• Have diabetes
• Have a skin infection or if skin areas with psoriasis become infected
• Use other medicines that contain corticosteroids or calcipotriol

Drug interactions


The use of Enstila with other medicines has not been studied. However, since medicines can interact with each other, tell your healthcare professional if you are using other medicines to treat your psoriasis. In particular, tell them if you are using medicines that contain corticosteroids.

Enstilar Storage and Safety Information


Enstilar should be stored at a temperature between 20°C to 25°C, away from heat. Do not puncture or burn the Enstilar foam can. Do not freeze the foam. Use Enstilar foam within 6 months after it has been opened. Keep it out of reach and sight of children.
