Are there any Precautions and Drug Interactions for Eloxatin?

Before receiving Oxaliplatin infusion, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to Oxaliplatin, carboplatin (Paraplatin), cisplatin (Platinol), or other medications. Oxaliplatin may affect your fertility which could be irreversible. Do not conceive a child (get pregnant) while taking Oxaliplatin for both men and women. Barrier methods of contraception, such as condoms, are recommended. Temporary hair loss may rarely occur. Normal hair growth should return after treatment has ended. Unless your doctor tells you otherwise, continue your regular diet. Oxaliplatin treatment may increase the risk of dizziness, nausea and vomiting, and other neurological symptoms that affect walking and balance. If this happens, you should not drive or operate machinery. If you have vision problems while taking Oxaliplatin concentrate for solution for infusion, do not drive, operate heavy machines, or engage in dangerous activities. To reduce your risk of getting cut, bruised, or injured, use caution with sharp objects like razors and nail cutters and avoid activities such as contact sports.

You should not take Eloxatin and inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have or have had:
• An active or recent infection;
• An electrolyte imbalance (such as low levels of calcium, potassium, or magnesium in your blood);
• A reduced number of blood cells;
• An allergic reaction to platinum-containing medicines such as carboplatin, cisplatin;
• Any liver problems or abnormal liver function test results during your treatment;
• Heart disorders such as an abnormal electrical signal called prolongation of the QT interval, an irregular heartbeat, or a family history of heart problems;
• Nerve problem;
• Severe kidney problems;

If you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy, you must discuss this with your doctor before receiving any treatment. It is not recommended that you become pregnant during treatment with Oxaliplatin and must use an effective method of contraception. Female patients should take appropriate contraceptive measures during and after cessation of therapy, continuing for four months. If you get pregnant during your treatment, you must immediately inform your doctor. It would be best not to breastfeed while you are treated with Oxaliplatin. Oxaliplatin should not be used in children and adolescents below 18.

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements to prevent drug interactions, which might be fatal to your health. This drug interaction may make your drug less effective, cause adverse effects, or potentiate other drugs' action. There may be a drug interaction between Eloxatin (Oxaliplatin) and other drugs such as:
• Live vaccines such as BCG vaccine, Influenza virus vaccine quadrivalent, intranasal, Measles mumps, and rubella vaccine;
• Oral anticoagulants ('blood thinners') such as warfarin (Coumadin);
• Pimozide;
• Yellow fever vaccine;
• Typhoid vaccine live;
