What is Edecrin used for?

Edecrin (Ethacrynic acid) is a "water pill" (diuretic) that works in your kidneys to increase the amount of urine you make. This helps your body get rid of extra water. Edecrin prevents your body from absorbing too much salt, allowing the salt to instead be passed in your urine. This medication is used to decrease fluid retention (edema) caused by conditions such as cancer, congestive heart failure, liver disease, and kidney disease. This effect can help your kidneys work better and lessen symptoms such as trouble breathing and swelling in your ankles, feet, hands, or belly. Take this medication by mouth as directed by your doctor, usually once or twice a day after a meal. If you take this drug too close to bedtime, you may need to wake up to urinate. It is best to take this medication at least 4 hours before your bedtime. Edecrin will make you urinate more often and you may get dehydrated easily. Follow your doctor's instructions about using potassium supplements or getting enough salt and potassium in your diet. Edecrin is not approved for use by anyone younger than 18 years old.

What Are The Possible Side Effects of Edecrin?

Some of the common side effects of Edecrin may include dizziness, lightheadedness, weakness, muscle cramps, upset stomach, or diarrhea. Some serious side effects include serious loss of body water (dehydration) and salts/minerals, confusion, unusual decreased urination, unusual dry mouth/thirst, fast/irregular heartbeat, or severe dizziness, easy bleeding, feeling of spinning, hearing changes, black/bloody stools, stomach/abdominal pain, signs of liver problems (such as nausea/vomiting that doesn't stop, loss of appetite, yellowing eyes/skin, dark urine). These are not all the possible side effects of Edecrin. In case of any unexpected effect, consult your healthcare professional immediately.

Are there any Precautions and Drug interactions for Edecrin?

This medication may affect your blood sugar. If you have diabetes, check your blood sugar regularly as directed and share the results with your doctor. This drug can lower certain salt/mineral levels (such as sodium, potassium) in your blood. Your doctor may tell you to use more salt, eat potassium-rich foods (such as bananas, orange juice), or take a potassium supplement. Older adults may be more sensitive to the side effects of this drug, especially dizziness and water/mineral loss.

Do not take Edecrin if you:

• Are allergic to ethacrynic acid or to any of its other ingredients;
• Are unable to urinate;
• Have recently had severe watery diarrhea.

Before taking Edecrin, inform your doctor if you:

• Are pregnant or breast-feeding;
• Are on a low-salt diet;
• Have cirrhosis or other liver disease;
