Are There Alternative Names for the Brand and Generic Divigel?

Divigel comes from Canada and is manufactured by Ferring. Divigel contains Estradiol as the active ingredient. There is no generic available for this medication.

What Dosages and Forms is Divigel available in?

Divigel is available as a transdermal gel in single dose foil pouches and in the dosage forms of 0.25 mg, 0.5 mg and 1 mg.

What is Divigel used for?

Divigel is prescribed by the doctor for replacement of estrogen in menopausal women for treatment of menopause symptoms which may include hot flushes, disturbed sleep and vaginal dryness. Estrogens are hormones produced by a woman's ovaries. When her menstrual periods stop (menopause), around the age of 45-50, the ovaries stop producing estrogens. Sometimes ovaries are removed by an operation and it is known as surgical menopause. This drop-in estrogen levels causes uncomfortable symptoms in women such as the feeling of warmth in face, neck, and chest or a sudden intense episode of heat and sweating (known as hot flushes). These hot flushes can further lead to frequent awakening at night, irritability, sleep disturbance and vaginal dryness. Divigel should not be used by women with an intact uterus unless it is prescribed in association with a progestin. Divigel should be used only under the supervision of a doctor, with regular follow-up at least once a year to identify side effects associated with its use. Your first follow-up visit should be within 3 to 6 months of starting treatment. Your visit may include a blood pressure check, a breast exam, a Pap smear and pelvic exam. You should have a mammogram before starting treatment and at regular intervals as recommended by your doctor. Your doctor may recommend some blood tests. Divigel should be applied once a day, around the same time each day. Apply Divigel to clean, dry, and unbroken (without cuts or scrapes) skin. Apply Divigel to either your left or right upper thigh. Change between your left and right upper thigh each day to help prevent skin irritation.

What Are The Possible Side Effects of Divigel?

Divigel can lead to certain side effects. Most common side effects include headache, breast pain, breast tenderness, bloating, weight increase, nausea/vomiting, abdominal pain (cramping), skin irritation, migraine and changes in mood. Serious side effects include breast lump, crushing chest pain or heaviness, pain or swelling in leg, persistent sad mood, sharp pain in chest, coughing blood, sudden shortness of breath, sudden partial or complete loss of vision, unexpected vaginal bleeding, yellowing of the skin and eyes. These are not all the side effects of using a Divigel. If you experience any unexpected effect, immediately consult your doctor.

Are there any Precautions and Drug interactions for Divigel?

Use of estrogens with progestins can lead to increased risk of developing breast cancer, heart attack, stroke and blood clots in both lungs and large veins. Use of estrogen alone therapy increases the risk of stroke and blood clots in large veins. Estrogens with or without progestins should not be used for prevention of heart disease or stroke. Estrogens with or without progestins should be used at the lowest effective dose and for the shortest time period possible. Keep your follow-up with your doctor regularly.
