What is Desowen used for?

Desowen (Desonide) is used to treat skin rashes and skin irritation. Desowen is a corticosteroid cream that works by absorbing through the skin and increasing the production of inhibitory proteins called lipocortins. Lipocortins are effective through the blocking inflammatory mediators, including prostaglandins, leukotrienes, and histamines. Use Desowen as prescribed by your doctor. Desowen is a topical medication. Do not take orally. This medication is typically prescribed for usage over 2 to 4 weeks. Do not use Desowen in larger or smaller amounts, or for longer than prescribed. Do not apply this medication over a large area of skin unless your doctor has told you to. Do not cover the treated skin with a bandage or other coverings unless directed by your doctor, as it can increase the amount of medicine absorbed through your skin.

What Are the Possible Side Effects of Desowen?

Common side effects of Desowen may include stinging or burning of treated skin, skin irritation, redness, itching, or hardening, dry, scaly, or oily skin, swelling in your hands or feet, acne or stretch marks, or redness or crusting around your hair follicles. Call you doctor at once if you experience worsening of your skin condition, redness, warmth, swelling, oozing, or severe irritation of any treated skin, changes in vision, signs of high blood sugar (increased thirst, increased urination, dry mouth, fruity breath odor), or signs of absorbing the medication through your skin (weight gain, slow wound healing, thinning or discolored skin, increased body hair, muscle weakness, nausea, diarrhea, tiredness, mood changes, menstrual changes, sexual changes).
