What Dosages and Forms is Descovy Available in?

The generic Emtricitabine/Tenofovir Alafenamide Fumarate combination is available in the strength of 200 mg/10 mg tablets only.

What is Descovy Used for?

Descovy (Emtricitabine/Tenofovir Alafenamide Fumarate) is a combined prescription medicine used with other antiretroviral medications to treat HIV-1 infections in adults and children who weigh more than 25 kg and have not developed resistance to these medications. The active ingredients in Descovy are Emtricitabine and Tenofovir Alafenamide Fumarate. Emtricitabine belongs to a class of medication called nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI), and tenofovir alafenamide is a nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NtRTI). It reduces the viral load and increases the number of T cells (CD4+). Lowering the amount of HIV in the blood lowers the chance of death or infections due to a weakened immune system.

What are the Possible Side Effects of Descovy?

If you experience any of the following common side effects, contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately:
• Abdominal pain;
• Diarrhea;
• Headache;
• Nausea and vomiting

Stop using Descovy and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the severe side effects such as:

• Symptoms of an overactive thyroid (such as irritability, nervousness, heat intolerance, pounding heartbeat, bulging eyes);
• Signs of a particular nerve problem known as Guillain-Barre syndrome (such as trouble moving your eyes, drooping face, paralysis, difficulty speaking);
• Unusual growth in the neck known as a goiter;
• Vision changes;
• Unexplained weight loss

This is not a complete list of the adverse effects of Descovy. Kindly reach out to your doctor or pharmacist if any of the above-listed side effects last longer than usual or get worse.

Are there any Precautions and Drug Interactions for Descovy?

Before taking this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it or have other problems. It is crucial to continue taking Descovy (and other HIV medications) exactly as your doctor prescribes. Descovy comes as a tablet, and the recommended dose is one tablet once daily, with or without food. Follow your prescription label carefully, and do not use more than your prescribed dosage. Descovy does not cure AIDS or reduce the risk of passing HIV to others through sexual contact or blood contamination. Avoid unprotected sexual intercourse and sharing sharps and other personal items with blood or body fluids. Do not miss your clinic appointment, and inform your doctor if you experience a strange side effect of this medication.

You should not take Descovy and inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have or have had:
• Heart diseases;
• History of depression/suicidal thoughts;
• Kidney disease;
• Liver disease (including hepatitis B infection);
• Low blood pressure or you are using antihypertensive medicines

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, and use your drugs as prescribed to control your infection. HIV can be passed to your baby if the virus is not controlled during pregnancy. Women with HIV or AIDS should not breastfeed a baby. If your baby is born without HIV, the virus may be passed to the baby in your breast milk. Descovy is effective and safe for children above eight years of age. Discuss with your doctor about the best way to feed your baby.

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements, to prevent drug interactions that might be fatal to your health. This interaction may make your drug less effective, cause adverse effects, or potentiate other drugs' actions. There may be a drug interaction between Descovy and other drugs, such as:
• Elvitegravir/Cobicistat/Emtricitabine/Tenofovir DF;
• Fezolinetant;
Lamivudine
