What is Dermotic Used for?
Dermotic (Fluocinolone)is a prescription topical medicine used to treat chronic eczematous otitis external (also known as chronic itchy ear) in adults and pediatric patients 2 years and older. The active ingredient in Dermotic is Fluocinolone. Fluocinolone belongs to the class of medication called low- to medium-strength corticosteroids. It works by inducing phospholipase A2 inhibitory proteins that are thought to suppress inflammatory mediators (e.g., prostaglandins, leukotrienes) by inhibiting arachidonic acid, thereby reducing itching and inflammation associated with this condition.
What are the Possible Side Effects of Dermotic?
If you experience any of the following common side effects, contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately:
• Burning sensation;
• Ear itching and dryness;
• Hypopigmentation around the site of application
Stop using Dermotic and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the severe side effects such as:
• Acneiform reaction;
• Allergic contact dermatitis;
• Ear infection;
• Irregular menstrual periods, changes in sexual function;
• Striae;
• Skin atrophy
This is not a complete list of the adverse effects of Dermotic. Kindly contact your doctor or pharmacist if any of the above-listed side effects last longer than usual or worsen.
Are there any Precautions and Drug Interactions for Dermotic?
Before using fluocinolone, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it, if you are allergic to other corticosteroids (such as hydrocortisone and prednisone), or if you have any other allergies. Dermotic is an ear drop that should be applied to the affected ear. Do not apply the drops to the eyes. Instill 5 drops of Dermotic oil into the affected ear. Tilt the head to one side so that the ear is facing up. Then, gently pull the ear lobe backward and upward and apply 5 drops of Dermotic oil into the ear. Keep the head in that position to allow the oil to penetrate lower into the ear canal. Gently pat excess material dripping from the ear using a clean cotton ball. Apply the oil twice daily for at least two weeks. Discuss with your doctor if there is no significant improvement in your condition despite regular use.
You should not take Dermotic and inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have or have had:
• Diabetes mellitus;
• Infection or sore around the ear to be treated;
• Kidney disease;
• Liver disease (including hepatitis B infection);
• Thyroid and adrenal problems;
• Untreated skin infection
Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or nursing a child. During pregnancy, Dermotic ear drops should be used only when needed. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. It is unknown if fluocinolone passes into breast milk when applied to the skin. Similar medications pass into breast milk when taken by mouth. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding. Tell your doctor about all the medicines you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements, to prevent drug interactions that might be fatal to your health. This drug interaction may make your drug less effective, cause adverse effects, or potentiate other drugs' actions. There may be a drug interaction between Dermotic and other drugs, such as:
• Aldesleukin;
• Deferasirox;
• Hyaluronidase;
• Other topical medications that contain steroids
