What is Cuprimine used for?


Cuprimine (Penicillamine) is a prescription medication that is used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, Cystinuria and Wilson’s disease. Cuprimine is a chelating agent. It works by removing excess copper in patients with Wilson's Disease. For the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, Penicillamine is known as a disease-modifying antirheumatic drug (DMARD), which helps to decrease pain, tenderness and swelling in the joints. For Cystinuria, it helps to decrease the amount of a certain substance (cysteine) in the urine which causes kidney stones. Cuprimine may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.

What are the Possible Side Effects of Cuprimine?


The common side effects may include decrease in the sense of taste, diarrhea, loss of appetite, nausea or vomiting and stomach or abdominal pain. The serious side effects may include:

• Easy bruising or bleeding;

• Mouth sores;

• New or worsening joint pain;

• Rapid breathing;

• Shortness of breath;

• Signs of infection;

• Skin blisters;

• Thinning or wrinkling of the skin

• Yellowing eyes or skin

You should not take Cuprimine if you are allergic to Penicillamine or Penicillins or if you have any other allergies.
