What Dosages and Forms Are Colace Available in?

The brand Colace is available in the strength of 10mg/1ml oral drops and 100 mg capsules.

What is Colace Used for?

Colace (Docusate sodium) is an over-the-counter medicine used to treat and prevent occasional constipation. Constipation occurs when your colon absorbs too much water, making your stools hard and dry. Without treatment, constipation can lead to other health problems like hemorrhoids. Colace is also used to reduce pain and rectal damage caused by hard stools or by straining during bowel movements. The active ingredient in Colace is Docusate sodium. Docusate sodium belongs to a class of drugs called laxatives. It works by increasing the amount of water the stool absorbs in the gut, making the stool softer and easier to pass. You should experience relief within 1 to 3 days of using this medication.

What are the Possible Side Effects of Colace?

If you experience any of the following common side effects, contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately:
• Diarrhea;
• Stomach pain

Stop using Colace and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the severe side effects such as:
• Rash;
• Rectal bleeding

This is not a complete list of the adverse effects of Colace. Kindly reach out to your doctor or pharmacist if any of the above-listed side effects last longer than usual or get worse.

Are there any Precautions and Drug Interactions for Colace?

Before using this medication, you should tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to Colace or have other problems when using Docusate sodium. It is crucial to continue using this medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Colace is available as oral drops and capsules. Take the capsules by mouth with a glass full of water or juice. If you are using the oral drops, measure the medicine using the dropper provided or with a dose-measuring spoon. Mix the drops in half to a full glass of fruit juice or milk to mask the bitter taste and prevent throat irritation. Drink plenty of fluids while taking this medicine. You should experience a bowel movement within 12 to 72 hours of using this drug. Contact your doctor if your symptoms do not improve after 72 hours. Do not use Colace for more than a week without informing your doctor. Overuse of laxatives can lead to serious medical problems. Your doctor will also recommend drinking enough water, eating dietary fiber, and exercising to prevent constipation.

You should not use Colace and inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have or have had:
• Nausea;
• Severe abdominal pain;
• Sudden change in bowel habits over the previous 2 weeks

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant. It is not known if Colace will harm an unborn baby. Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding. It is unknown if Docusate sodium passes into breast milk or if it may harm your nursing infant. Colace is not safe for use in children under 6 years of age.

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements, to prevent drug interactions that might be fatal to your health. This drug interaction may make your drug less effective, cause adverse effects, or potentiate other drugs' actions. There may be a drug interaction between Colace and other drugs, such as:
• Mineral oil;
Furosemide
