What is Cafergot Tablet Used for?

Cafergot Tablet (Ergotamine/Caffeine) is a combined prescription medicine used to treat migraine type of headaches. The active ingredients in Cafergot are ergotamine tartrate and caffeine. Cafergot belongs to a group of medications known as the "ergot alkaloids." Caffeine is a stimulant that causes the narrowing of blood vessels (vasoconstriction). Ergotamine is an ergot alkaloid that causes narrowing of blood vessels around the brain. By this mechanism, Cafergot treats migraine headaches by constricting blood vessel walls in the head, relieving the dilation that causes migraine headaches. It would be best to know that Cafergot treats a headache already begun. It will not prevent migraine headaches or reduce the number of attacks.

Before taking the Cafergot tablet, inform your doctor if you are allergic to the ergot product or are currently taking CYP3A4 inhibitors, including protease inhibitors and macrolide antibiotics. Concomitant administration of Cafergot with these medications may reduce blood flow to the limbs and cause ischemia. Cafergot is a tablet that should be taken orally with a cup of water. You should take the Cafergot tablet exactly as your doctor directed. It is usually taken at the first sign of a migraine headache, followed by one tablet after two hours if the headache is not relieved. Do not take more than six tablets within 24 hours. Seek immediate medical attention if your headache pain persists. Avoid the use of grapefruit products while taking caffeine and ergotamine. Do not stop your medication suddenly, as this may worsen your headache. Discuss with your doctor if you plan to stop your medication or if there is no improvement in your symptoms.

You should not take Cafergot Tablets and inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have or have had:
• Kidney disease;
• Liver disease;
• Poorly controlled blood pressure

It could harm the unborn baby or cause congenital disabilities. Use effective birth control to prevent pregnancy. You should not breastfeed while using this medicine. Discuss the best feeding practice or alternative medicine for your migraine headache with your doctor. Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements, to prevent drug interactions that might be fatal to your health. This drug interaction may make your drug less effective, cause adverse effects, or potentiate other drugs' actions. There may be a drug interaction between Cafergot Tablets and other drugs, such as:
