What is Brilinta used for?


Brilinta is used in combination with low dose acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin) to reduce the risks of having a stroke, another heart attack, dying from a disease related to the heart or blood vessel disease. Brilinta 90 mg is given to patients who have had a heart attack or chest pain. The 60 mg dose is given to patients who had a heart attack over a year ago. Brilinta contains ticagrelor which belongs to a group of medicines called as antiplatelet agents. It prevents formation of blood clots inside a damaged blood vessel. These clots can otherwise lead to cut off of the blood supply causing heart attack or stroke, chest pain (angina). Brilinta helps to stop the clumping of platelets which reduces the chances of blood clot formation which can otherwise block a blood vessel. Take Brilinta exactly as prescribed by your doctor. It can be taken with or without food. allow the Brilinta tablet whole with some water. Take one tablet in the morning and one in the evening at around the same time every day. Your doctor will also tell you to take low dose aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) (between 75 mg and 150 mg) once a day. Your doctor will tell you how long you should take Brilinta. Do not stop taking Brilinta without first talking to your doctor.

What Are The Possible Side Effects of Brilinta?


Some of the common side effects of Brilinta include headache, dizziness, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea or indigestion, nausea, vomiting, itching, confusion, tingling sensation, fatigue, muscle weakness, anxiety, cough, severe pain and swelling in joints, light-headedness, blurred vision, bleeding from stomach, bleeding gums. Some serious side effects of this medication include shortness of breath, increase in uric acid levels, heart problems, fainting, anemia, kidney stones, high blood pressure in lungs, and allergic reaction. These are not all the possible side effects of Brilinta. In case of any unexpected effect, consult your healthcare professional immediately.

Are there any Precautions and Drug interactions for Brilinta?


If you feel dizzy or confusion while taking Brilinta, you should use caution while driving or using machines.

Do not take Brilinta injection if you:

• Are allergic to ticagrelor or any other ingredients in the medication
• Have active bleeding such as bleeding in your stomach, from an ulcer or bleeding in your brain
• Have moderate to severe liver disease
• Had a stroke caused by bleeding in the brain
• Are taking medications such as ketoconazole, clarithromycin, nefazodone, ritonavir and atazanavir

Before taking Brilinta, inform your doctor if you:

• Have an increased risk of bleeding due to recent injury, surgery, or blood clotting disorder
• Have an increased risk of bleeding due to intake of medications such as warfarin, ibuprofen, naproxen, high dose aspirin, ketoconazole, clarithromycin, nefazodone, ritonavir and atazanavir
• Are going to have surgery including dental procedures
• Had a stroke in the past
• Are taking drugs to decrease heart rate or have conditions that cause slow heart rate
• Have a history of asthma or other breathing problems
• Have a history of increased uric acid levels
• Are pregnant or planning to become pregnant
• Are breastfeeding
• Are less than 18 years of age

Drug interactions


It is important to tell your healthcare professional about all other medicines that you have taken recently including any kind of supplements and non-prescription drugs. Some drugs which can interact with this medication include:

• Oral anticoagulants such as warfarin
• ‘Fibrinolytics’ often referred to as “clot-dissolvers” such as streptokinase and alteplase
• Other medicines to prevent or treat blood clots
• Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
• Ketoconazole, clarithromycin, nefazodone, ritonavir and atazanavir
• High dose (greater than150 mg daily) acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin)
• More than 40 mg daily of either simvastatin or lovastatin
• Digoxin
• Cyclosporine
• Rifampin, phenytoin, carbamazepine, phenobarbital and dexamethasone

To get the most benefit from Brilinta, do not use Brilinta along with Aspirin doses greater than 100mg day.

Brilinta Storage and Safety Information


Brilinta should be stored at a temperature between 2°C and 30°C. Keep out of the reach and sight of children.
