The brand Bricanyl Turbuhaler is available in the strength of 0.5 mg/100 dose Turbuhaler and 5 mg tablets.

What is Bricanyl Used for?

Bricanyl (Terbutaline) is a prescription medicine used to open up the airways in people with asthma, bronchitis, and other breathing problems so that they can breathe more easily. The active ingredient in Bricanyl is Terbutaline sulfate. Terbutaline belongs to a group of medicines called beta-2-agonists (bronchodilator). It works by opening up the air passages in your lungs so that air can flow into your lungs more freely. This helps ease symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, and feeling breathless. Bricanyl is a reliever, and it does not cure asthma or any respiratory diseases.

What are the Possible Side Effects of Bricanyl?

If you experience any of the following common side effects, contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately:
• Bad taste in your mouth;
• Chest discomfort;
• Dizziness;
• Drowsiness;
• Headache;
• Nervousness;
• Shaking (tremor);
• Skin rash

Stop using Bricanyl Turbuhaler and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the severe side effects such as:
• Chest pain;
• Difficulty breathing or worsening of your breathing problem;
• Fast or irregular heartbeat;
• Muscle cramps;
• Nervousness, restlessness and trembling

This is not a complete list of the adverse effect of Bricanyl. Kindly reach out to your doctor or pharmacist if any of the above-listed side effects last longer than usual or get worse.

Are there any Precautions and Drug Interactions for Bricanyl?

Before taking Terbutaline (Bricanyl products), tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or to similar bronchodilators (such as albuterol, metaproterenol, salmeterol); or sympathomimetic drugs (such as epinephrine, pseudoephedrine); or if you have any other allergies.

You can take a Bricanyl tablet with or without food, usually 3 times daily or as directed by your doctor. Suppose you are using the Turbuhaler of this product. It is generally recommended that adults should take 1 inhalation to their symptoms. They make take up to 3 inhalations in case of severe symptoms. However, adults should not use more than 12 inhalations within 24 hours. We advise you have an open conversation with your doctor on how to use either the tablet or the inhaler.

Do not smoke while using this medication as a reliever. Smoking causes irritation and damage to the lungs and worsens your condition. Speak with your doctor for further advice if you have difficulty stopping smoking. If you have diabetes, you may need to check your blood glucose more frequently, as Terbutaline can affect sugar levels in your blood. Your doctor will advise you about this. The powder is delivered to the lungs when you breathe in through Bricanyl Turbuhaler. Therefore, you must inhale as deeply and strongly as possible through the mouthpiece.

You should ask your doctor how to use the Turbuhaler or follow the following guide:
• Unscrew and lift the cap
• Hold Turbuhaler upright, twist the colored base around all the way, and then back all the way (you should hear a click)
• Breathe out gently away from the Turbuhaler (do not blow into it)
• Put the mouthpiece in the mouth, ensuring a good seal is formed with the lip, breath in through the mouth forcefully and deeply, remove Turbuhaler from the mouth and hold breath for 5 seconds or as long as is comfortable.
• Breathe out gently away from Turbuhaler;
• Cover the cap

Inform your doctor if there is no significant improvement (relieve your symptoms) any time you use this medication. You should not take Bricanyl and inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have or have had:
• Diabetes mellitus;
• Heart problems;
• History of seizure;
• Hypertension (high blood pressure);
• Thyroid disorder

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to get pregnant while regularly using Bricanyl products. You should consult your doctor before using this medicine in pregnancy. Although Terbutaline is secreted into breast milk, its effects on newborns are not known for use. Kindly reach out to your doctor for advice on what to do before breastfeeding your child to avoid any harm to the baby.

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements to prevent drug interactions, which might be fatal to your health. This drug interaction may make your drug less effective, cause adverse effects, or potentiate other drugs' action. There may be a drug interaction between Bricanyl and other drugs such as:
• Beta-blockers such as carvedilol, bisoprolol, metoprolol;
• Epinephrine for life-threatening allergic reactions;
• Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors for depression;
• Other asthmatic medication or inhalers;
Tricyclic Antidepressants for depression;
• Steroid medicines (such as prednisolone);
• Theophylline
