What is Biktarvy used for?

Biktarvy (Bictegrav/Emtricit/Tenofov Alafenamide Hemifumarate) is used to treat HIV (human immunodeficiency virus), the virus that can cause AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome). Biktarvy contains three antiviral medications (bictegravir, emtricitabine, tenofovir) that prevent HIV from multiplying in your body, and lowering the amount of HIV in your blood to undetectable levels, or under 50 copies/ml. Biktarvy is not a cure for HIV or AIDS. Biktarvy is a one-pill, once-a-day HIV treatment, taken with or without food. You can take Biktarvy at any time of the day. Before and when you reach an undetectable state, always use an effective barrier method (latex or polyurethane condoms/dental dams) during all sexual activity, and do not share personal items (such as needles/syringes, toothbrushes, and razors) that may have contacted blood or other body fluids.

What Are the Possible Side Effects of Biktarvy?

Common side effects of Biktarvy include nausea, diarrhea, or headache. Biktarvy affects your immune system, which can cause certain side effects. Call your doctor immediately if you notice signs of a new infection (fever, night sweats, cold sores, cough, wheezing), trouble speaking or swallowing, problems with balance or eye movement, swelling in your neck or throat, signs of kidney problems (little or no urination, swelling in your feet or ankles, feeling tired or short of breath), signs of liver problems (upper stomach pain, loss of appetite, dark urine, jaundice, clay-coloured stools), or signs of lactic acidosis (muscle pain or weakness, numbness or cold feeling, stomach pain, vomiting, irregular heartbeat, dizziness). This is not a complete list of side effects. Talk to your doctor about any other possible side effects.
