Benicar HCT (Olmesartan and Hydrocholorothiazide) is an RX medication that is used to treat high blood pressure. This medication is a combination angiotensin II receptor blocker and diuretic. It works by relaxing the blood vessels so that blood can flow more easily. Hydrochlorothiazide is a “water pill” (diuretic) that causes you to make more urine, which helps your body to get rid of the extra salt and water.

What are the Possible Side Effects of Benicar HCT?


The common side effects may include back pain, body aches or pain, chills, cough, fever, headache, loss of voice, runny or stuffy nose, sneezing or sore throat. The serious side effects may include:

• Decrease in vision;

• Eye pain;

• Fainting;

• Severe or persistent diarrhea;

• Signs of kidney problems;

• Symptoms of a high potassium blood level

Are there any Precautions or Drug Interactions for Benicar HCT?


You should not take Benicar HCT if you are allergic to Olmesartan and Hydrochlorothiazide or if you have any other allergies. Before you start using this medication, talk to your doctor about your medical conditions and about all the medications you are currently taking including OTC and herbal medications. Benicar HCT may interact with other drugs such as Aliskiren, Amifostine, ACEI, ARB, Bromperidol, Lithium, Promazine, Topiramate, among others. This medication may make you dizzy. You should not drive or do any activity that requires you to be alert. Limit your alcoholic beverages. Drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration. Benicar HCT may make you more sensitive to the sun. If you have diabetes, you should check your blood sugar levels regularly. This medication should not be used during pregnancy because it may harm an unborn baby. It is not known if this medication passes into breast milk. Hydrochlorothiazide passes into breast milk but it is not likely to harm an infant.

Benicar HCT should be stored between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 and 25 degrees C) away from heat, moisture and light and out of reach of children and pets. This medication should not be stored in the bathroom.
