Are there any Precautions and Drug Interactions for Aygestin?

Before you are prescribed Aygestin or its generic Norethindrone, tell your doctor if you are allergic to it or have any other allergies. Aygestin comes in tablet form and is usually taken once daily, with or without food. You should follow your dosing schedule carefully. Ask your doctor if you have any questions. The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to therapy. It would be best if you did not smoke while using the Aygestin tablet. Smoking increases your chances of clotting blood, high blood pressure, and heart attack, which may worsen with Aygestin medication.

This medication may cause blotchy, dark areas on your face and skin (melasma). Sunlight may worsen this effect. You should limit your time in the sun. Use sunscreen and wear protective clothing when outdoors. You should inform your doctor if there is no significant improvement in your condition or if it worsens.

You should not take Aygestin and inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have or have had:
• Heart attack or previously diagnosed with stroke;
• History of blood clots;
• History of intracerebral hemorrhage;
• Previous miscarriage or abortion;
• Treating cancer or family history of breast or uterine cancer;
• Vaginal bleeding of unknown cause

Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to get pregnant, or breastfeed a baby. This medication may cause congenital disabilities. Norethindrone is not recommended for pregnant mothers under any circumstances. Aygestin passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements, to prevent drug interactions that might be fatal to your health. This drug interaction may make your drug less effective, cause adverse effects, or potentiate other drugs' actions. There may be a drug interaction between Aygestin and other drugs, such as:
• Azole antifungals, including itraconazole;
• Anti-seizure medicines such as carbamazepine, phenobarbital, phenytoin;
• Rifampin;
• St. John's wort
