What is Alphagan used for?

Alphagan is a preserved eye drop solution that reduces the amount of fluid flowing into the eye and increases the amount of fluid flowing out of the eye. This reduces the pressure inside the eye. Always used Alphagan as prescribed by your doctor. The usual dose is one drop of Alphagan in each eye that needs treatment, twice every day, 12 hours apart. To help prevent infections, do not let the tip of the bottle touch your eye or anything else. Put the cap back on and close the bottle immediately after you have used it.

Some of the common side effects of Alphagan may include dry mouth, irritation of the eye, blurred vision, headache, tiredness, sleepiness, drowsiness, local irritation, sensitivity to light, eye dryness, dizziness, abnormal taste, weakness. Some of the serious side effects of this medication include decreased heart rate and decreased blood pressure. These are not all the possible side effects of Alphagan. Are there any Precautions and Drug interactions for Alphagan?


Alphagan may cause drowsiness, fatigue, and blurred vision and affect your ability to drive and use machines. Use caution while driving or using machinery.

Alphagan contains a preservative called benzalkonium chloride which may discolour soft contact lenses. If you wear contact lenses, remove them before using Alphagan. Wait 15 minutes after using the drops before you put your lenses back in.

Do not take Alphagan if you:

• Are allergic to brimonidine tartrate or any other ingredients in the medication
• Are receiving monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAO)

Do not use in neonates and infants below 2 years of age.
