Aldara Cream (Imiquimod) is a prescription medication used to treat actinic keratosis. Actinic keratosis, or solar keratosis, is a rough, scaly patch or bump on the skin caused by long-term sun exposure. It is a precancerous condition that can sometimes develop into squamous cell skin cancer. Aldara Cream is also used to treat a minor form of skin cancer called superficial basal cell carcinoma when surgery is not appropriate. This drug is also used to treat genital warts that appear on the outside of the body. The active ingredient in Aldara Cream is Imiquimod. Imiquimod belongs to a class of drugs called immune response modifiers. It works by stimulating the body's immune system to recognize and attack abnormal cells.

Are there any precautions or drug interactions for Aldara Cream?

Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to Aldara Cream or have other problems when using Aldara Cream. It is crucial to continue using this medication exactly as your doctor prescribes. Aldara comes as a cream. This medicine is for topical application only. Do not take it by mouth. Wah your hands and the skin area to be treated before applying Aldara cream. Allow the skin to dry for at least 10 minutes before applying the medicine. Always rewash your hands after applying the medicine. How you use this medication will depend on the condition you are treating. Apply a thin layer of the medication and rub it in until it disappears. Avoid getting Aldara in your eyes, mouth, nose, or lips.

Do not use Aldara cream for longer than it is prescribed. This can increase your risk of severe skin reactions. Avoid using this medicine on broken, wounded, or burned skin areas. When treating genital warts under the foreskin of an uncircumcised penis, pull back the foreskin and wash it with mild soap and water before applying Aldara. Clean this area daily during treatment. When treating genital warts around the vagina, avoid getting the cream on the more sensitive inner layers of vaginal tissue. This could result in vaginal swelling or irritation and painful urination. Aldara is not a cure for genital warts, and it may not keep you from spreading this condition to others through vaginal, anal, or oral sex. If you are treating genital warts, avoid sexual activity when the medicine is on your skin. Aldara can weaken the rubber that condoms or diaphragms are made out of. This medicine can make you sunburn more easily. Avoid exposure to sunlight or tanning beds. Wear protective clothing and use sunscreen at least SPF 30 outdoors.

You should not use Aldara Cream and inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have or have had:
• A weak immune system;
• A recent bone marrow transplant;
• Autoimmune disorder;
• Graft-versus-host disease;
• Sunburn

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements, to prevent drug interactions that might be fatal to your health. This drug interaction may make your drug less effective, cause adverse effects, or potentiate other drugs' actions. There may be a drug interaction between Aldara Cream and other drugs, such as other topical medications, etc.
