What is Advocate used for?

Advocate (Imidacloprid and Moxidectin) is a topical veterinary medication for use on dogs, cats, and ferrets. Advocate is effective against fleas, flea larvae, ear mites, mange mites, lice, roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, and lungworms. It prevents heartworms, lungworms, and skin worms, and also treats circulating microfilaria. Advocate is not for use in humans. Advocate has two active ingredients, imidacloprid and moxidectin. Imidacloprid works by spreading in the water-resistant aft layer of the skins surface, and acts topically attacking any parasites on the surface of the skin. Moxidectin penetrates through the skin and into the bloodstream, and distributes into all of the organs and targets the parasites inside the body. Advocate is applied topically to the animal’s skin, after parting the fur. For cats and ferrets, Advocate is typically applied to the animal’s neck and the base of the skull. In dogs, Advocate is applied between the shoulder blades at the bottom of the dog’s head, although for large dogs, the product should be applied in 3 or 4 spots along the dogs back.

What Are the Possible Side Effects of Advocate?

Common side effects of Advocate include temporary itchiness where the product has been applied, greasy fur, or redness of the skin. Vomiting also sometimes occurs. If the animal licks the application area, it may salivate for short periods of time. If your pet exhibits any more serious side effects, such as lack of muscular coordination, shaking, abnormal breathing, or continued vomiting, contact your veterinarian immediately.

Are there any Precautions and Drug interactions for Advocate?

It is very important that the appropriate medication is given to your animal. Advocate comes in different strengths depending on the animal it is for. Use Advocate for cats on cats only.
