Some of the serious side effects of Avapro include increased potassium levels in the blood, low blood pressure, jaundice, kidney disorder, rhabdomyolysis (muscle pain that you cannot explain, muscle tenderness or weakness, dark brown urine), allergic reactions, and decreased platelet count. Do not take Avapro if you are

• Are allergic to irbesartan or any other non-medicinal ingredients in Avapro

• Have experienced an allergic reaction to any Avapro or any other ARB

• Have been diagnosed with diabetes or kidney disease and are already taking a blood pressure lowering medication that contains aliskiren (such as Rasilez) or an angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor

• Are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Taking Avapro during pregnancy can cause injury or even death to your baby

• Are breastfeeding. This medication passes into breast milk

• Have hereditary diseases such as galactose intolerance, Lapp-lactose deficiency or Glucose-galactose malabsorption as lactose is a non-medicinal ingredient in this medicine.

This medication is not recommended for use in children and adolescents (under the age of 18 years).


Before taking Avapro, inform your doctor if you:

• Have experienced an allergic reaction to any drug used to treat high blood pressure

• Have narrowing of an artery or a heart valve

• Have or had a heart attack or stroke

• Have heart failure

• Have diabetes, kidney or liver disease

• Are on dialysis

• Have psoriasis or a history of psoriasis

• Are dehydrated or suffer from excessive vomiting, diarrhea or sweating

• Are taking a salt substitute containing potassium, potassium supplements or a potassium-sparing diuretic (water pill)

• Are on a low salt diet

• Are already taking a blood pressure-lowering medicine containing aliskiren (such as Rasilez)

• Are taking Angiotensin Converting Enzyme Inhibitors

• Are taking medicines that contain lithium

• Are less than 18 years of age

If you see a different doctor, inform him or her that you are using Avapro.

Drug interactions

Medicines that can interact with Avapro include:

• Agents increasing serum potassium, such as a salt substitute that contains potassium, potassium supplements, or a potassium-sparing diuretic (water pill)

• Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines (NSAIDs), used to reduce pain and swelling such as ibuprofen, naproxen, and celecoxib

• Blood pressure-lowering drugs, including diuretics (water pills), aliskiren-containing products (e.g. Rasilez), or ACE inhibitors

• Certain medications can increase your blood pressure, for example, medicines for appetite control, asthma, colds, coughs, hay fever and sinus problems.
